Hi there.
I have a friend in the probation service and he told me that getting on with people is a crucial part of what they are looking for. So go ahead and tell them about your special needs work, just emphasise that you have some great friends there and have learned that you can find common ground to communicate on with anybody, so long as you take the time to look for it and don't judge by appearances. that should cover it.
Good luck, Steve.

How is that judging? Helping people with special needs is a very noble thing. They're different. Everyone is different. Some people have more needs than other people, and different limitations. Shame on the person who said that to you.

You could put something to the effect that you have an ability to work with people on a one on one basis and deal with their special needs and problems. That you understand that people are what matters most.

I would suggest relating to others as in empathysing with their needs and being open to help if they require assistance, I think generally if you just describe yourself as willing to relate on a human level and understanding other peoples difficulties, and needs, maybe saying that eg you are a good communicator and proactive in your approach to difficult situations or something! hope ive helped a bit.xx

What a brill job you do. Its obvious you can relate to others. You have to be a good listener no doubt plus have many more good qualities, so you go for it and I bet you will make a good Probation officer. Good luck.

use your own words, how you relate to people. how compassionate are you? are you able to put yourself in their shoes? understand where they are coming from, see both sides? and so be able to help!
good luck
