A bar is usually one full measure or 8 beats. In sheet music, it's shown by actually placing a small bar at the end of the measure.

OMG. You might as well ask how to speak a foreign language.
In 1 easy lesson.
A 'bar' is a single unit of the whole piece of music. I suppose it's the equivalent of a sentence in writing.
If you want to go into timing..and how many beats in the bar etc.......which is maybe what you mean by 'how long'....then this will need a much longer explanation. If you are not a musician anyway.....you may lose interest. If you are a musician.......then I will try to explain it if you want to mail me.

it depends. if the time is like 4 over 4 (4/4) then it means there is 4 beats to a measure and the 1/4 note gets one count. so the 1st # means how many counts /beats it is.
