I think you have an "unspoken" assumption in the back of your mind. And that assumption would be that all people are created equal, should be treated equally, and should have identical lives and possessions. None of that is true. Some people have physical handicaps. People have different mental abilities. Some people are born into wealth. Others are born into poverty. Wealth normally begets wealth and poverty begets poverty.

With a bunch of middle class people!!!!(figuratively speaking). America's poor citizens are at about the same class as most other countries' middle class and even the upperclass (like in North Korea and Ethiopia) Some countries are plagued with diseases and wars so those people don't really have a choice, but remember, not everybody that is rich today was born into it, some people actually make good decisions and work hard. Even the people who are born into wealth can make bad decisions that ruin their lives, also either their parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents had to work hard.
Some people are born with disabilities, sometimes the main source of income in the family dies. These are not their fault. However, the majority of homeless and poor people came from middle class families, but are now addicts and are a burden to society.

The first thing we need to do is stop telling poor people that their way out of poverty is through government. I'll bet anything your professor loves big powerful government.

The second thing we need to do hold people accountable for producing children they cannot afford to raise. Ask your professor to present statistics that detail the difference in income for people who produce children out of wedlock and those who do not. There is a 100% he will not do that.

Your professor is trying to make you feel guilty. Guilt has never solved anything. The gap will last so long as people proudly embrace victimhood.

It's probably impossible in the near future. I won't repeat what the other answerers have said only this. Capitalism occurs because of scarcity, that there are limited resources that must be contested for either through force or economics. When technology comes to a point when scarcity is abolished, everyone will be equal.

The only way to "fill the gap" is make everyone poor by setting up Communism everywhere. Have the government seize all wealth and redistribute it, then we will all be equally poor. However, I assure you it won't last long.

Ronald Regan said "Communism only works in two places. Heaven where they don't need it, and Hell where they already have it."
