Are you serious? I have never been to Amsterdam, but I have heard people who had been there complaining about the same thing. I guess it is not the place I would like to spend my vacation at.

I'm a native of Holland, not Amsterdam, but I do visit the city regularly. Only once I've been asked about drugs, and it was a lady looking to buy some rather than a dealer. I guess I don't look like a druggy, kinda strange considering many people elsewhere call me a hippie for my preference of long hippie skirts and bare feet! Then I don't visit the red light district either, I usually go to the zoo or a museum... but I take public transport to get there and I've never been bothered on the dam or the train station either apart from that one time. Maybe you look too 'touristy', too much like their average client's profile... whatever that is...

Well.................if you look like a tourist (why else would you walk in Red Light District).......yes they will be pushy on the drugs dealing side.
I mean, take a look at the questions in the "Netherlands" topic. The majority is about the tolerated dope and the legal prostetutes.
No wonder the dealers seem to think that that's why tourists come to our country in the first place..........
But yes, it's horrible to be harrassed.
Wonder how you threw a person INTO the Dam? It's a square, not a pit or a river.......

Just ignore them. I have been there many times, and never ever had a problem. Why would you want to buy on teh street when you can buy legally in a shop? They're idiots on the street. And you're more of one if you let them get to you. They're harmless. IF they are offering harder things, and you're interested its your own risk, like in any other city around the world. Amsterdam is a beautiful city outside teh district. Check it out. You'll have a very different opinion.

I know what you mean. I've been there in the Red Light District of Amsterdam and sometimes these people will follow you cuz they think if they bug you enough you will cave in. Don't be afraid to look them straight in the eyes and say "No!" (or in dutch "Nee!"). You could even threaten to call the police if they don't leave you alone.

They know that the only reason tourists go to Amsterdam is for the drugs. So, if on top you look like one they will harass you.
I use to go to Amsterdam for shopping and never had one single problem. Of course I didn´t go to the red light district.
I agree with Endie vB's question. The dam is a square you cannot throw anybody into it. It is not a canal you know.

it's known to be like that all over in amsterdam, just don't even say no, or try to say you a tourist cause that is even worse, walk on and ingnore them, all of them people on the streets asking for **** or questions, ignore them and walk on, the best way to deal with it. even us dutch get harrased if we stop and talk.
for the rest holland is cool

Tell them to : oprotten met je teringzooi.
(get lost with your %^&*# stuff)
better:
take your mobile phone and call 112 (police). Dealing on the street is still a crime
