I am looking round for another job, but there don't seem to be many out there in my field. It's certainly gonna take a while to find another one, and I can't afford to just up and leave or go and take agency work.

How can I keep my sanity in the meantime? Anyone got any tips on how to make the hours I spend there more bearable?

It is your choice to choose to hate your job. Your employer or anyone else would not really care unless your "hate" results in poor performance. In this situation you are the only one who is suffering.

You can choose not to hate your job but to accept it as a necessity to earn some money. Look at the positive side you have a job, you are earning money and you are taking steps to get out. In the meantime if no jobs are available then now be the time to upgrade your education.

First, realize that your job is not your entire life. If it is not meaningful and fulfilling, find things to do in your off hours that are. That way you'll have something pleasant to think about during the hours you must spend in the torture chamber.

You don't say what your job is, but perhaps there are opportunities to learn new skills or do some work for other departments. Use your time there to learn new things. Take advantage of company-paid programs like seminars or tuition reimbursement to imrpove your skills and make new contacts (and perhaps spend time away from your desk.) Take every training class that's offered.

Likewise, you don't say what it is about your work environment that is troubling you. Think about what those things are and what you might do to change them. Then present your suggestions to management and/or HR. If you walk in with solutions rather than just a list of complaints, you'll be viewed as a pro-active employee rather than as a whiner. And who knows - it may not improve your lot, but it may help the next person in line when you find a better gig.

Good luck.

Tricky one!
if you let your standards drop, get sloppy and do bad work, this gets habit forming and damages you more than your employer. Each day needs some targets so you can reach the end still proud of yourself. Work out your hourly rate and tick off the bills being met/the drinks you can buy.
Good luck, Steve.
PS Unless the problem is bullying, in which case you need to lower your standards and leave immediately. No other answer to this one.

Positive affirmations.

I am in a job I enjoy.

say this 20 times every morning and youll soon find a job you enjoy.

as for dealing with your present situ.
affirm

I am strong and today is a great day. say this in front of a mirror before you go to work, and smile. smile all day.
ignor all the crap that people give you, and know that by your affirmation of I am in a job I enjoy, that it will not be long before you are out of your current situ and in one you want to be in.

A good idea is to get a life coach who could assist you in both making where you are bearable while planning for your future.
