Birth of a Nation

Devices for making a two-dimentional picture appear to move were being developed in the mid 1800's. These were awkward machines with things like large wheels with glass picture slides taken by a whole row of cameras on tripods. They could only show a few seconds of motion. The kind of motion picture we are familiar with came about in the 1880's with the development of cameras that could capture a series of images on a reel of film. Thomas Edison was one of the earliest inventors of such a process.

These movies however were regarded as novelties. They were shown at carnivals and in drugstores and showed simple scenes of moving people and objects, with no story to them at all, which by themselves were so fascinating to people living then that they would pay to see them. (There are stories of women raising their skirts at the sight of ocean waves projected onto the screen.)

The first picture that was ever produced expressly for the purpose of telling a story is believed to be "The Great Train Robbery" (1903) If it wasn't the first, then it is certainly the most famous early movie.

It depends what you classify as a film really. Metropolis was definitely the first big budget film, there was one about a flight to the moon which was the first 'Sci-fi' film, but the first film alludes me. Possibly it's merely a collection of photographs put in one of those chambers to give the illusion of movement, but I can think of no names, sorry.
