I don't know if it's as racist as much as it is ignorance. If black and white people are asking then I would lean towards more ignorance than anything. Or, they may genuinely be curious and don't realize how offensive the question is. If it's not and it's just white people asking, or just black people asking, then it can be perceived as racist. It is offensive either way, and actually I would ignore it. I'm pretty sure my parents got that all the time. My dad is dark, my mom is fair, I'm caramel colored, and my sister is the color of milk chocolate. We get those questions a lot. Sometimes you have to know when to pick your battles, and this is one that you can let slide by. As long as your daughter believes you are beautiful and that she is beautiful, then that's all that matters.

Maybe some people ask for that reason, others might be asking in a friendly way. Most people who get too offended, especially if they are not sure if the person is being friendly, or not, tend to have some racial hostility built up. Give people the benefit of the doubt and just be nice when answering. Even if someone is meaning to be rude about asking, if you answer proudly and happily, those people will back off. Don't take it personally, even if someone is trying to put it that way, you will feel better about things.

I don't know that it's racial so much as stupid, I mean do they really believe we're all carbon copies of our mothers? That's just a dumb question to ask anyone.
Maybe next time one asks, you should tell them there was a tragic accident at the hospital the day she was born, and she was dropped in the mop bucket that had bleach water in it, leaving her lighter skinned. If you said it with a straight face, they might believe you enough to go telling people, who would then go "Gah are you THAT STUPID? She was jackin with you, moron!"

Because most people are brainwashed, in America everyone has to fit into some kind of category. I've seen dark parents with lighter skin kids all the time even in Africa, it's not a big deal. Obviously those people are just nosey and superficial.

Oh please stop your whining! You better learn how to stick your chest out and be proud of being Black! I'm dark, I'm fine, I've got it going on! Men love me, I'm the bomb and everyone else is merely a f*cking firecracker! OK?
Get up off the feeling sorry for yourself! Confidence sweetie! That's what it's all about! I'm love being a black female and I have written this many times: I love being a black female and if I died and was resurrected I would want to come back as another black female or the same! You got start mimicking in your head "It's all about me and my family!" And you have to mean it! F*ck what everyone or anyone thinks about you! They are not feeding, f*cking or financing you! No darling, I do not play!

You are correct---it is none of their business. It is rude of people to ask you such a question because it has nothing to do with who you and your daughter are. When you and your daughter finally shed your earthsuits and face God, God will not care about the color of your skin or of hers while you lived on earth. The only color God will care about is the color red---does your soul flow with the color of the shed blood of his precious Son.

yes it is VERY racist. I would tell them "none of your freaking business idiot!"
Or you can tell them that you're both white and just had a very bad case of tanning in a cheap tanning salon.
