As someone who was replacing a Zire71 and who wanted to continue the standard I was used to but perhaps get Wifi and bluetooth, I found the only handheld worth looking at to be the Palm TX. While looking at the Tungsten models and the extensive 'homework' I did on it, I found that on the whole, users in the world found its battery life to be dismal and its potentially often problems annoying. I bought my Palm TX in November of 2006 and haven't looked back yet. It's awesome and I love the Bluetooth syncing with my laptop and wifi email sending/receiving plus website lookup. Having room to grow is nice too (more onboard space unlike the Zire71 which had too little to really customize my unit). I personally didn't want a handheld which had phone features, as phones take a beating and I didn't want my handheld too easily damaged. I additionally use the wireless keyboard without problems and just can't get over the wow factor of this unit. Whatever you decide, make sure you get a large backup card and purchase BackUp buddy-which when you need it, if you need it, can save your bacon.

Good Luck.

It really depends on what exactly you need, there's many models available in the Tungsten series and I'll assume you want to go online with it since you mentioned downloading, many only support Bluetooth wireless internet and there's not many places that use that technology yet to my knowledge. Only two or three Palm Pilots offer standard wi-fi (802.11 b / g) connectivity as well as Bluetooth.

I was looking for a new Palm myself directly on the manufacturer's website and while it is pricy ($299) the "Palm T/X" http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/tx/?creativeID=LMFB|tungsten_tx_free_1gb seems to be the best model (plus if you order online, they throw in a free 1GB memory card). If you got cash to burn though, you can just go for the Palm LifeDrive ($399 - no longer available online but I've seen it in Best Buy) which offers the same features as the TX but with a 4GB internal hard disk for all your mp3, photo, application, data and video needs.

Tungsten E2 is the most affordable at $199 but it lacks wi-fi and if you don't have a bluetooth enabled router, you're out of luck with the internet, plus to use multimedia such as music, an expansion card that's sold seperately is required to make use of it. All in all, for the grief, the Tungsten isn't worth and simply won't cut it for a power user like yourself. Get the Palm TX, you'll love it.
