Yes, of course. But not live.

BBC's Match of the Day was exactly the same format as it it is now, on Saturday night showing highlights of all the First Division matches that were played earlier that afternoon.

ITV had different highlights programmes depending where you lived, usually shown on Sunday afternoon, and they concentrated on all your local area's teams, not just in the First Division. In the London area, the programme was called The Big Match. and covered all 13 London sides.

Occasionally, live european matches from the European Cup, UEFA Cup, or the now defunct Cup Winners' Cup were shown mid- week if there was an English team playing (almost always Liverpool, Nottingham Forest or Tottenham in those days!).

no as it was all 3 o'clock kick-offs on a saturday afternoon back then none of this playing at 4 in the afternoon on a sunday to bleed a few more quid out of the sky viewer..

saturday afternoon consisted of dickie davis and the world of sport with wrestling from a town hall in barnsley or Grandstand with frank bough with racing from haydock park

match of the day was your lot.. although i think some of the FA cup games were televised

In the 80s, 1st division was the the top division, and yes it was televised.
In fact it was free to watch, as there was no Sky in those days so it was on BBC or ITV.
