On both the Snake and Columbia rivers there are more than 50 dams built for hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and irrigation sources. Along both rivers there are any number of different industries, such as paper mills, aluminum plants, steel plants, ship building companies, lumber companies, etc.,.

Pollution of the Columbia and Snake river systems is an ongoing problem. The major ecological impact has been on the androgenous fish runs (..salmon and steelhead trout..). The numerous dams have severely impaired the migration of these and other fishes from the ocean to upriver spawning grounds.

Lots of dams have been built on both rivers.

Lots of hydroelectricity has been produced, so the Power industry has been favored. Shipping is possible on the Snake river all the way to Lewiston Idaho, because the Columbia and Snake are now navigable.

Salmon used to swim far up both rivers to spawn, all the way into Canada on the Columbia, and well into Idaho on the Snake. That doesn't happen, now. Fish ladders on the dams have helped somewhat, but the volume of Salmon isn't what it was at the time of Lewis and Clark.

Haven't they both been dammed up for hydroelectric generation? That messed up the rapids, but helped the water skiing industry.

It kinda makes it tough on the returning salmon, too.
