iI have a 99' Jeep Wrangler and the transmission sticks in only first gear when it is cold. Someone told me it could be the transmission filter? Is there a such thing and could that be the problem?? It runs fine the rest of the time. Thanks Rick

Most folks have their transmissions serviced at least once in the car's life cycle. Usually between 75,000 and 110,000 miles.

In time your transmission fluid gets old and loses it's orginal lubricating capabilities. So it becomes nessecary to service your transmission by removing the pan and draining the fluid, and replacing the filter. Then adding fresh fluid. It's a pretty simple proceedure that's not too expensive.
However, alot of folks simply have it flushed at a service center like Jiffy Lube.
The only disadvantage is, that will not do any good if the transmission filter is clogged or defective. This flush will also not clean the magnet in the transmission pan.

Also, they sell products like Slick 50 Transmission Stop Stick, which works pretty good.
You simply pour a bottle into your transmission tube, and youre all set.

Is this automatic or manual? Only automatic transmission have filters and this will not cause you problem. Maybe time to change the fluid. If you live in a very cold climate I would recommend using one of the new synthetic oils, are expensive but very good at extreme temperatures.

Automatic transmission need clean fluid to operate correctly. There are many tiny oil passages inside the transmission case and they can be affected by dirty fluid or fluid that has become hot. (when it gets too hot, you get varnish forming)

There are a number of products on the market that can be added to your transmission that will help with this problem. Check your fluid and if it looks dirty or smells burnt, you need to change the fluid and filter. Get some Lubegard flush to clean things out. Available anywhere they sell premium transmission products. (Good auto parts store)
