To play right, or to play fast? I ask this question because often when playing backgammon or dominoes (but probably other games are similar), I often get people telling me to hurry up, get a move on, and often becoming very abusive and nasty. I usualy take about 6 or 7 seconds to move, but in certain positions when tough choices need to be made, can take up to about 30 seconds. Is it them who have the problem and should learn patience, or me that should always make a move within 3 seconds, even if it`s the wrong move? I usualy just tell them "if you want a faster game, you should be playing football not board games". I`d like to know the overall opinon of other players, and are there more people who think to play right is best, or to play quick. Also I`d like to know are others annoyed by being told to hurry up every time you take more than a few seconds to move.

Clueless u r right on about the cube, noone seems to use it propley. All they want to do is doub.doub.doub 128, not what is meant for. When used propley the double cube is 1 of the better features of the game.

I can only speak for Backgammon, I don't play Dominoes.

Backgammon kind of has a tradition that you move quickly, but even the experts do have to stop and think about a position every so often. Depends in what room you are playing in too, slow play should be more acceptable in a beginners room one would think.

6-7 seconds with an occasional 30 doesn't sound unreasonable.

And sometimes I went through what you did, not because I needed that much time but because the $^^#@$% internet provider was slow. Still got people saying to hurry up.

I'd say recognize who these people are, and in the future don't play with them, abusiveness has NO place in the game rooms no matter what the cause.

By the way I can't resist adding these same people probably do some or all of the following: boot people from tables to "protect" their phony rating, leave an unfinished game without saying anything, complain about "how lucky" your rolls are, and make a mockery of the doubling cube (MY Pet Peeve, read on the internet what it is REALLY for, not a toy to set to 128 to avoid the hard work of improving your rating).

I believe to play right is better. There are games that have time limits on them..and I believe that you have that much time to make your move, otherwise, there wouldnt be that certain time limit set.

If people complain and tell you to hurry up, that is their problem. If they become a problem, you can always block what they say.

Well, it depends what is better for you at the moment. If you have a lot of time, better to play right and there is a bigger chance of winning.
If you don't have time, you play fast, but it shows that you don't really care about the game.
But it is your choice and good luck in the games!

My solution in these boardgame 'long movers' situations is this: (honed over decades of boardgaming) Get out your three-minute timer from BOGGLE and hold it threateningly in your fist. Keep glancing at the timer and harrumphing. When your good nature runs out, slap that timer on the table and be ABSOLUTELY SILENT for the three minutes it takes for the timer to run out. That's enough time for anyone.
