Absolutely not. His lack of pre-authorization is not a legal excuse. You were performing legitimate work. If he refuses to pay you, he is in violation of federal labor laws.

Lets say you make $10.00/hour and you work 15 minutes OT that is another $3.75 right off the top now ad in taxes and insurance plus other over head expenses. This could easily go up to a cost of $5.00 for 15 minutes of work. If a number of employees have OT of 15 minutes on a regular bases this can get very expensive. Another way to look at it is.... did you perform at your highest ability that day, or did you chit chat with someone at work or on the phone when you were working? Most bosses will not complain if you are focused on your job all day and need the extra few minutes to finish something up that can not wait until the next day. Usually it is due to observing employees chit chatting or surfing internet or wondering around when they should be focused on work. Think about your work habits then decide if the extra 15 minutes could be due to you not being focused. Right now with the economy the way it is that 15 minutes could mean lay offs even.

Unless you signed something when you started that said you had to clear overtime hours by him (which in a store seems unlikely) he has to pay you for hours worked.
Tell him it's his legal obligation to pay you for those hours. Then remind him that you had no other choice because of the other employee quitting. Ask him if from here on out he would prefer you either work overtime, or close the shop. Bet he will choose you work overtime and go along with it.

The ungrateful boss should be glad you are putting the effort in and pay the OT. If not, I'd suggest looking for another job and really put him in a bind.

He HAS to pay you! If he has a problem w/ it, then you need to tell him to hire someone else. I wouldn't do all the work anyway! Especially if I had an *** hole for a boss!

First of all your boss is a shrewd and incoherent person. If he knew you were doing overtime ha should have spoken with you earlier.Probably it was his convenience until he decided to take action.

Tell him that you'll reduce your hours going forward, but he needs to pay for your time. If he continues to give you a hard time, start looking for a new job.

He is required to pay you, (I think?) Is he in charge of hiring, or are you?? If he is, then he should have someone there to cover for you!
Don't tell him it's okay, to not pay you, that isn't right...but if you are willing, maybe tell him to give you straight time for the extra hours??
