I have a lil sis who's 13, almost 14 (I'm 20). I ask her about her school and school events--especially the stuff she's excited about. I ask her if she needs help when she has school projects and homework, and what's she's up to in general (like if she has a boyfriend, and what they do on dates, etc.). I ask her what she's been reading, and what she wants for her b-day (it's coming up :). And if she seems sad, I ask if she's okay and if she wants to talk. She's pretty private, so I try not to pry. Sometimes we talk about serious stuff, and sometimes really random stuff. I also ask her about teen trends (like what are the newest cool phrases and fashion and stuff), because I want to stay in touch with her culture and what's "cool." I don't want to be one of those adults who thinks they know what teen life is like but really has no idea!

You should not interrogate them but you should know where they go, what they get up to and who they spend time with - that's just caring about them. You should spend time with your child so that they are prepared to open up to you - they will tell you stuff and you should be able to guage whether they are happy or in trouble etc.

I always ask my daughter if she has thought about sex, does her friends talk about it. If they smoke, does she kiss boys (and not her lil bro). I always try to stay on top of things. Don't want any surprises.
