Yes, if you give the P46 to your new company.
But you don't have to - you can send it off yourself to the tax office.
There are instructions on the form regarding this.

No, they won't be able to find out - HMRC would never divulge this info.

generally any new empolyer will want to know who your previous emplyer was to get reference checks etc.
