The hours were long, the pay was low, and the conditions were inhumane.
A shift would likely be 16 hours a day, 6 days a week. There was a high rate of accidental death and dismemberment on the job, simply because the workers were exhausted and, because of this, grew inattentive. If this happened, you were fired--no workman's comp, no health benefits, nothing except the loss of your livelihood and dire poverty.
It was accepted as a matter of course that women and children were paid less than the men. They were regarded as cheap labor by the owners of the factories--and, of course, sexual harassment was an element of everyday working life.
Small wonder these people were often called "wage slaves!"

The mill workers were often chosen because of their small stature, they were used as loom clearer's ,but this was a dangerous job, they were often maimed and disfigured, or even killed. Many children died like this.It was hard work, there is a book called The Condition of the Working Class, it covered the Industrial period. Many young women worked long hours to help their families survive. They lived on starvation wages ,while the boss's lived in splendour.Health and safety was unheard of in those days and everyone was expendable.

Women and girls were often locked in rooms (consider the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire). Many of the rooms had no windows/no ventilation. They were forced to stay in the rooms all day long with no breaks. The machines were dangerous and many women and girls were injured while working.

pure hell and slavery, and if it was`nt for the unions in the 30`s it would still be that way but they are losing their power and besides all the union plants are moving to foreign countries and the secret society of the skull and crossbones and government are helping to destory the nation.
