I work @ a hotel and each day we run 1 laundry, 1 breakfast, 1 front desk and right now 1 housekeeper cuz it's usually slow. the other day we were busy with 64 rooms out of a total 68. On any reg. day the breakfast guy will help with laundry, but on this day he decided not to help at all. He didn't help strip rooms, wash, or fold. He even told the laundry lady he was glad it wasn't his prob. Well wehn she said something to the boss he told her "well did you ask him for help". She said no, so he told her it was her prob and that she should have asked if she didn't like it she knew where to find the door. I think it's totally bogus and any decent human being would have helped her out. I wasn't here on that day or I would have helped obviously. Anyway was just curious as to other opinions on the situation.

This really depends on what the boss says when he hires you. If the breakfast guy is responsible to help, then he should have done it. If he is not, you might not like the fact that he did not pitch in, but he might be within his rights.
I can tell you this....that guy would be fired if he worked for me. Everyone contributes in my opinion. Someone needs to explain the big picture about why he should have volunteered to help. If you don't get the rooms cleaned, you have to make check-in guests wait. That can cause you business and ultimately affects every employee.

Obviously the Laundry Lady needs help and the Boss is unwilling to extend it. The breakfast Boy helped her earlier, but refuse to do so now. I guess something must have turned him against her. You better find out what is the cause of trouble between them and solve it, so that the amicable situation returns. And since you also want to help the LL, it will not be a problem in future.

My question is, "what happened to Mr. Breakfast that he used to help out and now he won't any more?" Was he told it wasn't his job? Did he and Ms. Laundry have a big fight the day before? Something changed there.
The boss should make it clear to everyone that you are running with a lean staff and so everyone is to help the others out when their own work is slow. The "it's not my job" syndrome is highly contagious and very debilitating to an efficient and productive work environment.

The breakfast guy usually helps out, you did not say his employment depended on it so I have to assume he was voluntarily helping out Why?is he is a nice guy most times and
wasn't nice that day or he doesn't care about his job anymore or was he also to busy
She should have told her boss the truth but her boss is not a professional either"there's the door" that is immature ,lazy and I would say a threat. This place needs better managment

I am never amazed to hear managers who fail to act then blame someone else...managers who are good, are too few .
The issue is managment; the manager is responsible for "managing" who does what , when and where; it is not up to a working employee to "ask for help"; it is either the duty of the "breakfast guy" to help out, or not...
If that were the case, do tell what the manager does?

I think she should have asked the breakfast guy before talking to the manager. If it's not in the breakfast guy's job description, then technically he doesn't *have* to do it. I agree that he should have helped. It would have been courteous of him. I'm guessing there isn't a whole lot to do after breakfast, so maybe the manager should add that to his job duties.
