Location has a lot to do with it. If you live in a very populated area (Waikiki, Honolulu), it won't be no different than any other major city. Budget about 10% more (to account for being in the islands) of what you currently budget.
If you live in the outskirts of Oahu or other islands though, a food budget can be stretched very far...
Try having the local fruits and vegetables. Whatever is in season. Avocados, mangos, cocos, papayas. The local farmer's market (stay away from the turist traps) could be an excellent cheap source. There is a costco on each of the main islands, so you can do bulk shopping there. You can also try the discount stores. Safeways also carry good deals, and foodlands are good stores as well.
When my wife & I lived in Kauai, our budget was $150 - $200 a month. We could have certainly spent a lot more, but we could have also done it for less. We loved the local produce, fresh eggs, the feeling of Aloha. We had a small patch of dirt, and grew our own papayas (they grow like weeds) and mangos (once the tree is stablished, all you do is wait for them!).
Best of luck on plans.

at the very least if you just by things on sale and in bulk $200 a month
if you do not and eat out twice a month bob would say you looking at around 300ish
so 200-400 on average.
bob lives with bob's mom who is poor and we go to the store to buy the essentials when on sale and it cost around $100 each time.

I budget at home by looking at grocery ads and creating menus out of what's on sale. You can look at the same ads for Hawaii stores. One I found in particular is at www.foodland.com Pull up their advertised specials to see what you can come up with.

Is CA close enough? I've been tracking our food expenses and we need about $400 a month for the two of us. (That's padded, we don't eat out and trying to watch our money since it's expensive here.) We're trying to keep at $300, but usually don't make it. I do know that Hawaii is more expensive, but I think it's on par with Napa Valley.
Good luck!
