Serial have 2 rows of pins, 9 entire pins, they are smaller and look lots like the computer screen port (VGA port). VGA ports have 3 rows of pins. Parallel ports are lots longer (additionally 2 rows of pins) and characteristic approximately 30 or so pins. they are basically used for older printers. they have very virtually become extinct. RJ45 is the community port that looks like a telephone port on a modem yet is a touch better. CAT5 cable is community cable, it plugs into an RJ45 port.
