I am neither a Christian or a Conservative but they're halfway correct when it comes to the civil rights movement. There were many communists involved in the movement and still are even today.

a personal anecdote to back up your post:
I was parochial schooled through the 1960's at an extremely conservative fundamentalist facility. Most of the church elders and the pastor were members in good standing of the local chapter of the John Birch Society.
I was brow beaten daily that Martin Luther King was a communist and an atheist.
In 1965, at the height of the civil rights movement, the Jewish synagogue across the street from my school was firebombed and vandalized to the point of being totaled. The temple approached the church where I was about using the Parrish hall for their sabbath services until their place of worship could be repaired.
They were DENIED, as was the secular cub scout troop who used the temple for their weekly meetings.
I am very sad to report that NOTHING in that neighborhood has changed

What's the point? Every political movement has it's nut jobs (think Rosie) A careful review of the passage of the Civil Rights Act will show a higher percentage of republicans voted for it than did democrates. LBJ would have never got it passed without the GOP. Fact check: this is 2007, not 1965

There were and are fundamentalist Christians who joined the KKK. How much more of a racist can you be if you're a KKK member??? Christians who think this is no big deal are a real problem, at the very least, not Christian. I think Christianity and racism are mutually exclusive, You can be a Christian or you can be a racist, you have to choose one or the other, they DO NOT work together.

Read a little history and you will know who was responsible for civil rights. At the time of slavery the south was governed by Democrats. Think about that for a while. Everyone likes to point to Democrats as the leaders for everything but always a Republican paved the way.

It's something that many conservative don't seen to get.
They think that if they're not allowed to force their beliefs down everyone else's throats, somehow their rights are infringed.
What they don't understand is that the whole point of the Constitution is to prevent the majority from forcing their beliefs (especially religious beliefs) upon others as a matter of law.
There never was a right for them to demand that others follow their religion or adhere to their personal beleifs. But many seem to think they should be allowed to do it anyway because they happen to be the current majority. It's really rather sad.

The civil rights bill was a landmark in our history. It is terrible that so called Christians opposed it.
After reviewing the link, it appears they quoted from extremists, nor did it support the total Christian point of view.

Having a bit of a problem with your "they" there.
Not all of the people who are now of the wing-nut squad opposed civil rights. (I mean, the 30 year olds can hardly be held responsible.)
Also, there's still a lot of racial hatred among the wing-nuts (as there was then), so this won't embarass them one bit.

Senator Robert Byrd. democrat. w.Virgina was a member and in fact a recruiter for the KKK.
Well, ah'll be doggone!
Maybe it's his quote ya got there, big fella. We can go ask him if you like. The democrats keep re-electing him.
