The two most important events in environmental policy in the last fifty years have been the creation of the EPA and the Clean Air Act, the result of implementation of which are described in the article below.

Nixon, a Republican, created the EPA.

Bush Sr., a Republican, pushed for and signed the Clean Air Act - - - there were disagreements over some of the details but nobody can argue that this was done over his objection, rather he was very supportive.

Sometimes there are disagreements over how quickly to increase the standards for emissions control from various industries and vehicles but the bar has always been raised, not lowered. The air is cleaner now than it was when Bush '43 took office - at least it is HERE - just not in China....

So, I guess I'm just not seeing any basis for the popular notion that US cities would look like Bangkok were it not for the Democrats.

At one time Republicans were the leaders of a cleaner enviroment. But that was a long time ago.

The EPA was created after Democrats passed it in Congress. It was in response of the Ohio River catching on fire due to all the chemicals that were dumped into it.

Times have certainly changed.

what you say may very well be true, but it does not square with the simple fact that republicans have backed up this preposterous notion that global warming is not real.

to use an analogy, there were some catholic popes who did tremendously great things - in many ways the nurturing of the european renaissance can be traced to financial support of the catholic church.

on the other hand, it was also the catholics who gave the world the inquisition, where hundreds of thousands of perfectly innocent people were tortured and murdered in the most painful and hideous way.

your analogy is meaningless.

the fact that bush sr. and nixon were the ones who invented some govt agencies has nothing (as you very well know) to do wtih the current and very accurate notion that most republicans are more concerned with business costs rather than a clean environment.

this notion that global warming is not a reality will be viewed by future generations who will literally be forced to live in our trash, will be viewed as one of the most evil of our time.

I reserve worship for an more desirable power. I voted for Nixon, i think of there have been some large achievements via his administration. the unhappy ingredient, is that he had some real psychological problems which led to him to hate and suspect each physique around him. He held grudges and felt each physique replaced into out to get him. It stained an in any different case exemplary legacy.

As they say in golf, Drive for show and putt for dough.

I think Republicans like to create these agencies so they can say they are doing something but they don't actually want the agencies to do anything.

The clear skies and clean water acts stand out in the annals of legislative insanity. At least the Bushies have a sense of irony.
