I just found the most popular laptop at TigerDirect.com, it's only $599.99. Another good site would be NewEgg.com.

stay away from acers
atolon processor are my fav and a little cheaper
don't get less than 1 gig of ram 2 if you can pay for it
after that the rest is price, preference and semantics

I know Dell is cheaper, but I'm partial to Macs. They're pricier but better.

i was looking at wal mrat yesterday and they had a new acer on sale for 599.00 dvd burner and everything, but im not very familiar w/ acer. u might look it up! good luck!!
