You know what? I don't care! I drive an electric car. It costs me less than a penny per mile to drive around. I bought it used from eBay for only $2000. Here's a link to some other cheap electric vehicles:

Cut back on the amount of gasoline that Americans use; that will bring the price down. Don't drive as much, get a car that uses less gasoline. If all the states implement the Read ID bill, then illegal aliens would not be able to get a drivers license. Most of them would not drive then. If we deported most of the illegal aliens in this country, the demand for gasoline and other forms of energy would drop, and thus, lower the price.

Maybe if people weren't so obsessed with having to drive everything instead of walking, biking, taking public transit, et cetera there wouldn't be such a huge demand. Then the cost will surely go down as demand drops.
Also, government has no basis to interfere just because it's a profitable enterprise. There are no (that I know of) cases of price fixing, agreements to non-competition, et cetera that would make this industry one that must be prosecuted.
Additionally, gasoline costs in modern day cost the average person the same number of hours work as in the 1960s. That is, if gas cost x dollars per gallon and x dollars required y hours of work now gas costs z dollars where z dollars requires y hours of work. That is, the price isn't monumentally costly.

The first thing we can do is to utilize more of the public utilities, like commuter trains, bus services (not cabs) where the fuel spent on each trip is expended on more people.
If you have to go in for own vehicles you should prefer fuel efficient varieties to Power Guzzlers like, 4 X 4.
Next will be to invest money on renewable and affordable power sources like solar water heaters for heating and cooking purposes.
The more you save on energy bill in both fuel and electricity will bring down the demand for energy which in turn will bring down the fuel rates.
One more alternative is to force legislators to support funding alternative energy sources.
The more energy you save will go for a long way

The answer to your question (as opposed to your speech) is nothing over the short-term and to try and decrease our personal energy demands over the long term.
We are effectively hostages to the parts of the world who have energy resources we don't have (I am assuming you are in the United States). The only thing we can control is to deliberately use fewer of those resources, thereby decreasing our personal consumption (and cost) and across the board decreasing demand, thereby forcing prices down.
With all due respect, your analysis is overly simplistic. A very complicated set of international finance, regulatory, and market demand components drives all of this and no one country, let along person, can dictate it all, as you are suggesting.

If you have a problem with it, quit buying gas. If you can't stop buying gas, then you are the reason it is getting more expensive.
