is there a difference in working out when a person chooses their max dumbbell weight and does a few reps with that, or chooses a lower (yet still challanging) weight and does many reps with that one?

There is a huge difference. When you use larger weights and lower reps, you are tearing tissue down and rebuilding with more mass. This will make you bigger and stronger, but won't improve your stamina or speed much. Working out low weight, high reps, will increase speed and stamina, but won't build as much mass. You should decide on a goal ad tailor your workout accordingly.

Aha! You've asked the right question. For the past two years I've been doing an 8 to 16 days cycle. On my last cycle day I'm lifting only 90% my max. Two sets of five on parts I only want strong and five sets of five on parts I want strong and bigger. If you work out that way you not only produce healthy joints and tendons, you also get very strong. You might want to get that book by Pavel Tsatsouline (The Evil Russian) called, "Power to the People". It changed my life!
Oh I need to add that on day one, you start at a very low weight adding weight every day until you get to your 90% max. When you start a new cycle, you start on what used to be day 2 on the last cycle. Get it? So you end up going up in max every cycle. The guy who beat the Olympian lifting record works out that way and he's not a big burly looking guy like most of them. He's a very short, small Bulgarian man.

Yes there is. low weith more reps, you are more likely to lose weight, while high weight low rep, will get really big muscles. Don't forget to take protein after your workout to fix the tissues....

yes, you increase mass with heavy and few reps, but in the
other hand the shape looses quality,
when you use less weight but do more reps you develope the shape more than developing the mass
