I have a long history of stomach problems which became worse recently to the point I couldn't function, I had to ask my Dr for a referral to a specialist there are 4 Dr's in that group and 2 have been treating other family members for a while, so I requested one of the two and one specifically I did not want because of poor bedside manner any way it took 1 week to get the appointment and low and behold it was the Dr I had specifically asked not to have, my Dr's nurse cancelled the appointment and it's been another week and I still don't have a appointment my nurse said the specialist office was very upset and wanted to know why I didn't want this Dr. my nurse also said I've not got an appointment because she felt I'm being punished for cancelling the first one. Back to my primary Dr I shouldn't be having to ask for test or referrals he should be suggesting that to me right? Thank God I have ER for back up if I get any worse.

This is exactly what is wrong with the health care system. Yes you should change Drs. Dr.s have a bad habit of treating ailments rather than taking the time to find out what is wrong. Do you have any walk in clinics like MedExpress where you live. If you are in a lot of pain you may want to try something like that. Or you can request to see the nurse practitioner. You can usually get in to see them more quickly and they know just as much as the Drs. Good luck.

If your insurance dictates that you obtain a referral from your primary care provider, then yes you do need "permission" to get a referral to a specialist. As for being punished for not wanting to see a specific doctor, I think that nurse is being unprofessional for suggesting such a thing. No office worth its salt would make you wait if an appointment was available. If you feel your health care provider is not listening to you, then you have a responsibility to make your feelings known. If you still do not get a response you feel is proper, then by all means change providers. You have a right to have your questions and concerns addressed to your satisfaction.

You have a perfect right to ask for the doctor that you want and the nurse does not have the right to ask you why you didn't want to see that certain doctor. Your primary doc should have sent you to one without you having to ask him. Go back to the primary doctor and tell him what happened and ask for a different referral or call the hospital for a referral to a good gastroenterologist.

Sometimes stomach problems are caused by poor diet. Give your stomach a chance to recover, take nothing but fruits in the morning up to 12:00 noon. Buy the book "Fit for life" an follow it.

I know a GP who does an excellent job, cured my wife's problem... Dr Moira Goh of KN Chin clinic in Suntec City. Worth a shot.

sometimes it takes standing up and saying that you want to see a specialist. am not saying that's right though. in the long run it's your health. if you can't get an appointment then go to the ER and see a specialist there, you can at that point ask the specialist if it's possible for you to have a follow-up visit with him/her at their office. that's how we got one for my husband when he was having serious problems with his knee, and thank God we did---turned out his knee was badly infected inside and he had blood clots from the ankle to the groin. and don't settle for the doctor you don't want, you won't be comfortable with him. find one you can trust. Good luck to you.

I had the same problem! I have IBS, a bowel disease that causes spams in my colon when i'm stressed or eat anything like ham or mayo if it's been room temp for like.. 10 minutes. You need a specalist because people with chronic problems can develop polyps that may lead to cancer. you need a colonoscopy and blood tests asap. get out of that practice! go on your isurance's website and find local docotors. sometimes you'll find you don't need a referral if they are in your network!

That is awful yes i think you should change doctors. I recently lost a baby and the bed side manner is awful. you are doing them a favor by being a patient. your doctor may be a great guy but your not getting the attetion you need for this stomach problem. rember the squeaky wheel gets most attetion. sounds to me like they are not listening to your needs.
