Typically, a degree is required; usually a bachelor's degree. The major should be business or risk analysis. Some universities have really good programs for risk assessment/management.

The amount of math necessary really depends on the type of underwriting you want to pursue. Personal lines is really about understanding the coverage situations you need to insure. Commercial Lines is about understanding the nature of risks that companies get involved with. Life and Health underwriting will have heavy math. You will be consulting numerous tables to calculate rates. Surety underwriting (and that done in financial institutions for lending) is also very heavy in math. You will need to analyze financial statements and other background information to write a risk.

Do some research in your area and call some local insurance companies. Ask to speak with the "your state here" underwriter. When they answer, just ask them what they did to get where they are. If you are already close to graduating, it could even be the first step in the door.

Another good foot in would be to go to a temp agency and see if they have any jobs in the industury you would like to get into.

Good Luck.
