They parrot what their propagandists say. But history shows that Hamiltonians (today's Republicans) tend to favor larger government, while Jeffersoninans (today's Democrats) tend to favor smaller government. These, of course, are not absolutes as occasionally one will deviate from the general philosophy but they are rare.
The largest beurocracy ever created is the Department of Homeland Security. The Bush Administration is the only Administration where this department has existed.

The party is for less government than is the Democrat party. As for the freedoms you speak of well they are still there. Phone taps are common in time of war and this administration is not the first to use them. I will not say that they are not pushing some limits on privacy issues but in the name of preventing terrorist acts on our soil some inconveniences are OK. There is a difference in being hassled and loosing freedom. What I do in my home is a private matter and if they put bugs there I would think they were exceeding boundaries but anyone who talks on the phone should realize that it isn't and never has been a secure why of talking.

Because originally, the Rublican part was run by fiscal conservatives, who are in favor of small federal govt.
It's only the past 2-3 decades that the neo-conservatives have been the dominant force, and they believe in large govt as an effective means of promoting their social agenda nationwide.

It doesn't just take a republican to sour government officials, it takes people. Being a Democrat or a Republican doesn't matter.
