"Bring the boys back home" is a wonderful idea, as many have stated here. I may disagree with the timing and scale, BUT...your question points to the political game that they are playing. I hope upon hope that people all ideologies get their emotions in check and look at how our politicians betray us for the benefit of their personal gain. Citizenship before partisanship people!

You would think that these elected officials should be smart and have some common sense but it doesn't look like it. They are so geared to go Party Lines, that they cant think of what would be good for America.
The military needs to be given the OK to take the gloves off and kick butt. Abu Grave scandal, fueled by the well intentioned but liberal Democrats, tied the hands of our troops, just like all the " stop the bombing" tactics of Viet Nam which got more troops killed.
Capitol hill needs to leave Iraq alone, tell the President, " get in, do the job and get out, and be done with it. They spending too much time trying to make the other party look bad and hope the people will put there person in power for a term as President.

It always sickens me how one sided people involved in politics can be. It's like they own no mirror.
How are the Democrats playing any more with the safety of troops than the Republicans? Both essentially voted for the war, but now some from each party want the troops home. Isn't it "safer" for the troops to be back here rather than on their 4th tour in Baghdad?
I find it amazing that people can call Democrats dirtbags when Republicans refused to provide proper body armor, proper medical care, and proper assistance after serving our great country.
I'm not saying that Democrats are in anyway innocent in this whole mess, but to blame solely them in amazingly ignorant.
Try doing your own research rather than being so damn blinded by the (R) or the (D) next to someone's name and the latest Rush Limbaugh Talking Points. You may be surprised when you use your own brain.

They must be learning bad habits from the republicans. They have played politics with the safety of our troops for close to 4 decades now. And FYI all politicians are lying dirtbags with nothing more than a political agenda. I think that's the definition of a politician in webster's.

I believe it was the rebuplicans that sent them over there, without the proper equipment or the proper number of troops to accopmlish the task at hand, and when you say lying dirtbags wiht nothing more than a political agenda, are'nt you really talking about all politicians? both parties lie, cheat, steal, kill, and do many things far from being legal, but what has really killed our once great country, is people that buy into this two party bullsht, anyone who votes along party lines rather than really voting on what is best for our country and what is moral is killing us, the politicians have seperated us so much by class, religion, and race that we fight amoung our selves about petty things like an invisable man in the sky, that now we are so far seperated from our goverment, it is now a us and them, we the people no longer exsist in goverment, there is goverment and people and it was not ment to be that way, to say all democrats are lying dirtbags only shows what an extreamists you are, and when your so far to one side that you can't here the lies in your own party or see the good in the other party then you are no good for the country, you are no longer capable of making a desicion based on facts but rather your just going along with your gang, and that is what we have in office now two gangs, that do what ever they want in order to put money in their pockets and in the pockets of as many of their friends pockets as they can.

Because politics is how we get things done. And ensuring the safety of our troops - that they are prepared for the situations into which we send them - is important to get done. So they passed a bill to ensure that troops are trained, equipped, and rested; prepared for the job we send them to do.

Because it's their job. Congress controls the budget. Period.
Just like the President has certain things that only he can do, Congress has certain things that only they can do.
If the president is concerned with the safety of the troops, then he should not veto a bill that brings them home alive.

They added the pork to get the votes to pass it -- which is what a majority of voters wanted (not the pork, but getting our troops out).
They want to pressure Bush into signing a commitment to bring them home.
How can you accuse the Dems of playing politics with the safety of our troops?
Bush sent them into harm's way for no good reason (playing political-lie-orama the whole way), has refused to outfit them with life-preserving equipment, slashed their pay, extended their leaves, refused to care for many of the wounded, and murdered over 3,000 and maimed tens of thousands more.
This administration has show nothing but callus-ness for the troops, except when Bush uses them as backdrops for his political speeches.
Who's been playing politics here?
We want a date to bring them home; the Lunatic In Chief will never consider bringing them home.
Congress is doing what it can to force him.
(Heck, talking about playing politics -- there he was, speechifying, with a bunch of uniformed folk standing behind him, as though he speaks for them. He's disgusting.)

lol if anyone actually thought the Democrats cared about the troops they were mentally deficient to start with.
just like the ones who thought the election would cause an immediate removal of troops from Iraq, or the impeachment of bush.
Democrats in office care about one thing, getting power and money for them selves, thats the only real reason they hated bush, he was getting what they wanted.
they are getting ready to shoot them selves in the foot, and if/when Iran starts something (like whats going on today) they are going to have to answer the hard questions about why pork projects took ammunition and armor from our soldiers.

Is there something that would guarantee their safety more than withdrawal from the quagmire?
Not that I'm advocating everything that they are selling, but honestly - is there? No.
As for their tactics, it is germane to congressional process. Since they have been blocked by Republicans in prior attempts, they have shifted tactics. To say that this is "hypocritical" would be naive - further, biased. Both parties engage in the practice on a regular basis.
