Me and my husband have been fighting like crazy about schools for our kids. He wants to move to the suburbs in order for them to have a better education. I realize that the schools are better in the burbs but i really want to have our children in schools where there are more black and hispanic students so that they can grow up in a diverse enviroment. I know that there is a lot of violence in the public schools in our city but i still think diversity is the most important thing. should i stick to my guns on this or give in to my husband and move to the all white suburbs? both me and my husband are white but like i said i want my kids around other groups

I think that is important too. Since you sound torn about this issue, I think that maybe you should ask your kids and find out from them how they feel and which situation they are more comfortable with. That should weigh heavily on your decision. No one knows your kids like you do and in my opinion, you should make the ultimate decision based on your children's feelings.

You can have the best of both worlds, you can involve them in community programs that encourage cultural diversity. Whether is is a city sports team, club or volunteer organization. At the same time sending them to a suburban public school.

If you and you husband have Friends of different ethnicity's have them over regularly. Children learn much more from their parents example when they are younger than they do from their peers.

If the public school that you want them to grow up in has blacks and hispanics, just dont do it, unless that school is good, if not, dont its worth it really, just because they go to a nice school doesnt mean they wont respect other races and not be racest.

If anyone there more likely to get involved in heavy drugs, drug dealing, also the fact of violence, gangs, ect ect, just take the suburbs, it doesnt your kids wont like other groups of people.

The world is a diverse environment: including the suburbs. Frankly, I'm tired of white people wanting their kids to go to school in "bad neighboorhoods" and calling that diversity. Try expanding your own community of friends and relations.

BTW, Diversity is not simply sitting next to a person of color on the bus...it's not about the ratio of different ethnicities. It's about accepting the presence of everyone's cullture in "your" environment. It's about allowing people to be who they are and not trying to force them to walk and talk like you. oh yeah, and not calling them other.

You would put your children in a violent school, just so you can pat yourself ont he back brag about how accepting you are of "other groups"?? STUPID.

Move to the suburbs!

who says it has to be an all white suburb? Why not chose a racially mixed one? Then your kids could have the best of both worlds- exposure to different kinds of people, plus an educational experience that is likely better funded and kid friendly (aka safer) than a big city school.

It's a balance of opportunities. Some urban schools have more/better opportunities than small suburban ones - have you looked at things like magnet schools for when they're older, at least? For example, my partner went to a school where he could only take Spanish, French or Latin - his younger brother goes to public school and has a lot more language opportunities.
