My finacee put me in charge of finding a vacuum that we will register for at Macy's or target. I have terrible allergies (HEPA filter a must) and want the best vacuum possible that will not add to my suffering. We have a spending limit of $400. Please feel free to give model numbers as well as brands. Anyone answering this is a life saver so thanks!

Dyson - shop on www.overstock.com, www.ebay.com, and compare prices on www.nextag.com or www.bizrate.com. I have an indoor dog and several cats. Other cheaper vacuums used to last about year. I have had my Dyson 1-1/2 years; model "the animal." Purchased as an open box item (www.overstock.com) and I saved alot of $. (They run great deals on shipping too.) It has the filter, comes with an extra, and the clear dirt cup. It totally cleans and the air smells fresher having run it.

Consumer reports best buy is a Eureka "Boss", but it isn't very light. Their is a HEPA filter on the unit and it has bags that are supposed to trap more in them. Switch out the bag inside about once every 3 months if you are vacuuming once a week.

A bagless unit will just let all the dust and allergens out of the unit when you dump.

Bottom line-you need a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. My Eureka has one (Whirlwind) and they don't cost as much as a Dyson
The HEPA is the final filter of the vaccum exhaust-it filters out even the finest partical size-IE dander

Look into the Dyson Animal. When I was researching vacuum's a while back I ran across it and reviews said it was great for people with animals because it picks everything up. I don't know what kind of allergies you have though...

In your price range, then I guess the best would be Dyson. If you want the very best though that will last you a lifetime,I sould seriously consider buying a Kirby. It would be a very worthwhile investment.
Good Luck!
