Here's an exploded view of a typical one with all the parts from the AutoZOne people; it might help. Specifically fig. 3

Windshield wipers have parts that can and need to be replaced sometimes. If the wiper is not doing a good job, causing streaks or skipping the rubber part of the wiperblade has become hard, frayed or just generally needs to be replaced.

Go to an auto parts store to buy new windshield wiper blades. If you tell them the year, make and model of your car they can look up the kind of blades you need. It is fairly easy to change them, but they can probably explain to you how to do it, too.

when you go to the store to replace it, it'll be called a windshield wiper blade refill. (and yes, they are rubber strips). There will be a book with listings of different kinds of cars, and you find your car, and it'll tell you which size of refills you need. Good Luck. If all else fails, ask someone who works there!
