Ever seen the movie The Manchurian Candidate?

Their conspiracy plan was they got their person on the ticket as the VP, they planned to shoot the President Elect at the victory celebration (as soon as he won and months before swearing in).

If the President-elect dies before being sworn into office, the Vice President-elect would become President ONLY if the Electoral College has already met and voted.

If by chance the death comes before the meeting of the Electoral College, then the members of the Electoral College can choose someone else.

if the elected President dies before being sworn in, then the current VP would be sworn in for the remainder of the term, then the newly elected VP would assume the Presidency, that is why during the inauguration the VP is sworn in first just in case the top dog croaks in the 5 minutes he is waiting to take the oath
