Male bettas have the long flowing fins, females have much, much shorter fins. Also, the females are usually less colorful and if mature and in good condition a plumper belly and a small eggs spot under their belly.
Here's a photo. The female is in front and the male in back:

The colorful ones with the long tails you see in the tiny tanks at the store are usually all male. Females do not have the bright coloration or the long flowing tails. You will most likely have to special order one as most fish stores never keep them in stock.

There you can clearly see the difference between male and female...there is no mistaking them.

males: pointed anal fin, often have the longer tails, although you can get plakat (short tailed) males too. full "frill", the part that sticks out when they flare

females: oviposter (small white spot on the underside of their belly), rounded anal fins, short tail. smaller "frill" that won't go right around the face. may look fuller in the belly, very much so if a male is present and they've got "eggy". due to selective breeding you can get vibrantly coloured females these days if you know where to look!

Betta males are vibrantly colored, with deep blues or striking reds. The females are rather drab, with some spots of color here and there, but not much.

Just remember: don't put to males together. They're not called Siamese Fighting Fish for nothing....

The males are the more showy bright fish with a long tail. .I see the females quite often where I shop for fish.I think they are cute although people seem to prefer the males but I don't have one yet.

Male betta fish are more colorful and generally have the long graceful fins, whereas females are dull in color and generally smaller.

I have seen both male and female at pet stores. The males are brilliantly colored with long fan like tails. The females are more dully colored and have short fins.

males are the ones usually sold in stores. they have the big tail fins and i guess its called dorsal fin, but they are the prettier ones. females dont have the bigger prettier fins. they are more plain ones. if you go to the petstore to buy one, they mainly sell the males.
