I have been trying to get a job with a recruitment agency. In a phone call yesterday, one of the staff was very offensive to me.
I have Cerebral Palsy which makes it difficult and painful for me to handwrite, but I can use a computer with ease. While talking to one of their employees he said that because of this that, in his oppinion, I am 'illiterate'. As you can imagine I was pretty hacked off at hearing this and put in a complaint about him.
During the complaint his boss clamied that they had been trying to get me a job but all the employers that they had contacted wouldn't be interested in me on health and safety grounds.
I don't accept this view and I was wondering if anyone on here knows what my rights are on this and if you know what the procedure is for me to take this matter further. I am not interested in compensation, its just a matter of principle.
Thanks for reading this.
Would you consider signing my petitions on disabilty rights

Don't know the situation; but in the US, many employers are looking for qualified people no matter their physical condition and recruiters can't make a buck if they can't find you a job.
Might consider changing agency's ; and good luck to you; sometimes it just takes time and the right situation !

Go to your state attorney general's office and report them for discrimination. Your rights are outlined in the law and workplaces are required to accomodate those with disabilities who are capable. Do not let this ride. Take some action. File a complaint with the state under the Employees with Disabilities Act. You can look up the laws on the government websites.
Oh, and by the way, I don't consider you disabled. I consider you abled but with different requirements to help you be effective and successful. You are absolutely not illiterate! If your petition was available at a local business or if I saw you on the street asking for signatures, I'd sign your petition. However, I don't do business over the internet due to all the identity theft and the fact that there is little or no assurance of privacy and integrity of information.

Go to the nearest Citizens Advice Bureau as you DO HAVE RIGHTS! This is discrimination of the worst kind! They will give you advice on how to proceed and if you can get compensation then do it! A few hits to the pocket might teach them something!
Good luck to you!
Do you think they'd call Stephen Hawkins illiterate! Most of them wouldn't understand him as he's so far above them on the intellectual scale! Yes I'll sign your petition and any other similar ones!
Wish people would learn we all come with or develop disabilities in certain areas and physical and mental rarely go together!

Hi Footynut,
If you are in the UK.
There is no need to start a petition because there is legislation in place to protect you already.
Discrimination on the grounds of disability either directly or indirectly is illegal and the conduct of this agency must be reported.
Contact the Citizen's Advice Bureau or a solicitor that specialises in employment law.
Good luck.

First off I am appauled at the way you were treated. I like you have a disability. I have spastic dyplegia. I would contact an attorney, as well as the american disabilities act. I will be happy to sign your petition. As it is not right the way you have been treated. It is illegal for a person to discriminate based on your disability. http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/adahom1.htm This is the official site . Try contacting someone from there. Good luck. Edit: I did not realise you were in the UK, so I dont know if my info will help. I'm sorry, as far as the petition it probably wont help if I sign as I am in the US but if it will e-mail me and I will sign it.h

Oh, I'm so sorry! That sucks!
Am I correct that you live in the UK? I have *no* idea what the laws are there.
Heck, I don't even know what our laws are, and I have a chronic health condition that definitely impacts my work.
All I can tell you is good luck and I really hope you find some answers. I don't accept their view, either. My local community is very good to disabled people - we have several organizations that help them get work.
Best wishes to you, and I am sincerely sorry you have to deal with idiots.

This is discrimination and I am sure you could take legal action against the agency and all the companies that won't consider you.
A couple of years ago I employed a lady with cerebal palsy and she is no different to anyone else.

beneficial you could turn them down. a physician can not carry out a technique devoid of your signed recommended consent. In a case the place someone has been deemed mentally incompetent to make their very very own scientific judgements (by ability of a psychiatrist), recommended consent should be won from somebody else (a healthcare proxy - many times a relative who has been chosen to make judgements for the guy). An emergency technique at the same time with a tracheostomy to save your existence could be saved remote from consent, yet soreness administration procedures are no longer emergency procedures.

As I am in the USA I don't think my signature on your petition will help, but I would otherwise.
But I say, start your own business and drive those other guys out of business with fair competition and hard work.
You are capable and have abilities. Just ask Stephen Hawking.

i'd love to sign but i live in the usa
jobs can not discriminate on disability (equal rights act)---it is against the law
this person who called you illiterate deserves a good kick in the butt and to be fired----i would so fire them for that!---they are ignorant, stupid and rude
how dare they!
you have right to collect unemployment, disabiltiy and right to have a job that is good and pays well
you need to get legal counsel on your side possibly to help you with your rights
this is a discrimination issue
good luck and best wishes to you
