You're right, Americans had a healthy distrust of crooked politicians and often ran them out of office.
Not so with consumer products, however. The snake oil and patent medicine hucksters were mostly successful -- Americans bought their little green and brown bottles and swallowed the contents whole.
As time passed, these fraudsters parked their wagons on Madison Avenue and became hidden flannel suited persuaders. Americans bought everything and anything that was highly advertised, as they soaked up the subliminal suggestion that consuming was the key to happiness.
The hucksters morphed again in the late 1970's, as they began working for the political parties, mainly the Republicans. Not only do they package and sell our politicians, they also coin catchy phrases such as "contract with America" "family values" and the "death tax". They have planted word associations from the Bible into political speeches and have turned demagogue political hacks into demi-Gods. These evil manipulators are most successful at the level of the base, whose world view they totally control. Thus, pathologically lying politicians are given halos, wings, power and riches by the people they deceive and cheat; and not the tar, feathers and ticket to eternal hell that they so totally deserve.

The neocon leaders have sold America out, only to help themselves. It is a con game, that few Republicans can understand.
An endless war, with no victory plan. Not hard to figure out.

The country is now dependent on government. It's a bad addiction. All the money in this country is controlled by them. They decide what you get to keep. For example, the countries largest voting block is senior citizens who would be stupid to vote out their social security.
