I have a speech to give regarding the history of autism in public schools. I have found a lot of information about disabilities in general (IDEA of 1997, ect) but I really need autism-specific information. I'm looking for documented cases of the first school districts to allow autistic students, the students' names if available. If anyone can refer me to a website or a book, I'd appreciate it so much!

www.wrightslaw.com is an interesting web site that may help. It contains a lot of information about legal cases and landmark decisions in cases involving education.

For a long time kids with autism were either put into mentally handicapped classes, left to fail in regular classes, or just left school totally. It's really only fairly recently that we recognize kids with autism and have specific services for them, so you might not find as much info as you expect.

Search for a local CARD center in your area. CARD is the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, and many are attached to universities. They should have have information, or you should be able to interview someone who can help.

If you still can't find what you need call your local school board and ask to talk to the person who's in charge of the exceptional education department. They may be able to help.

There are a lot of books that can help, too. Look for ones by Temple Grandin, who has autism and went on to get her doctorate and do some pretty incredible things.

Good luck!
