Officially it's in the dog family, but in the film of the same name, he was an assassin, trying to assassinate the French president.

The JACKAL referred to in the films comes from the codename the killer chose in the original film starring Edward Fox. In French jackal is "chacal", the English police during their search for the killer were after an Englishman called Charles Calthrop who was mysteriously absent during the search.

A jackal is any of three (sometimes four) small to medium-sized members of the family Canidae, found in Africa, Asia and Southeastern Europe[1]. (The name jackal is borrowed from Turkish Çakal which originates from Sanskrit: Srgālah [2]) Jackals fill a similar ecological niche to the Coyote in North America, that of scavengers and lesser predators. Their long legs and curved canine teeth are adapted for hunting small mammals, birds and reptiles. Blunt feet and fused leg bones give them a long-distance runner's physique, capable of maintaining speeds of 16km/h (10mph)(just over 6 min/mile) for extended periods of time. They are nocturnal, most active at dawn and dusk.

Explanation of the character's name

The assassin invents the codename of the Jackal after he is hired by Rodin and his fellow conspirators. The codename stems from the name of the animal, as both the assassin and the animal are both predators, who hunt their prey. His real name is not stated, although several characters in the book know his true identity. He is adept at killing people with his bare hands and he is an excellent shot with a rifle. It can also be inferred that the Jackal is proficient with hand guns since the two German scientists were both killed with a 'neat little' bullet hole to the spine, most likely done with a low calibre pistol. The Jackal is chosen by his employers for his expertise and neutrality, and most importantly, his anonymity.
