I'm with Go-Know-Yourself: James Joyce is such a trip. But I'd suggest jumping right into Ulysses instead of easing in through the short stories. Aside from learning plenty about life, with Ulysses you learn stuff about yourself too -- notably about how much ambiguity you can handle. Joyce invented stream of consciousness, remember.

That is honestly impossible for me to decide as there are many different writers each of a different genre, I like specific works, for very different reasons.

Everything from Aristophanes to Emile Zola~

Anyone who knows me understands, however that I always end up pimping James Joyce.

Portrait of the artist as a young man is a brilliant piece of art. I adore it!

It is among my favorites... It's as close as I can come to choosing only one among a million.

Can I got with a poet? Then I'd say W. B. Yeats, and his collected poems prove it--though Borge's collected poems conceivably nudge him out.
