Effexor is supposed to have the fewest side effects but it does have the worst discontinuation syndrome of all SNRI meds. (They can't call it withdrawal since it's supposedly non-addictive. I argue that not being depressed makes it addictive enough.) You CANNOT just quit this medication.

As Salaam to you all, Taking any medication for a real health problem will not be Haram, despite the fact that that medication has alcohol within it. Enough has been mentioned about anti-depressants by means of other contributors to this query but it is as much as the person and what the physician has prescribed that issues. It is as much as the person to take or not take the prescription in the event that they truly believe and consider that they can do without it, or the health practitioner may also be influenced into prescribing an replacement medicine. Wa Salaam

First of all ,are the meds helping, secondly most antidepressants cause changes as due many medicines in the balance between acidic and alkaline levels in the stomach usually causing dry mouth { or what is called cotton mouth}, stomach aches bloating and general abdominal discomfort especially when taken over long periods of time. I've found otc remedies such as betaine hydrocholoride {hydrochloride being a naturally occuring substance in the stomach} to dramatically improve stomach problems, and increase absorbtion thus resulting in a better therapeutic response.Often times people lean towards antacids as a remedy when in fact they don't have enough acid to digest and move the stomach contents into the small intestine where they are readily absorbed..It is always a good idea to discuss even otc meds with your doctor first!

I take a lot of meds, many have nausea as a side effect. I take them at night before I go to bed so I can sleep thru most of the side effects. I take Effexor XR which is a SNRI (not a SSRI) for chronic pain.
Physical dependence and addiction are 2 different issues so don't worry about it. Addiction is an emotional problem while dependence is just physical.
Good luck

I am on Effexor Xr dsgree when documentation says it has little side effects. Anyways, it didn't cause any stomach disturbances for me but the neurological side effects are very bothersome (fainting, light-headed,vertigo, hearing sounds that arn't there, blurry vision). You have to talk to your doctor to see what's best but if I knew about the side effects and the withdrawl that I will have to go through, I would have never started so do a bit of your own research so you can ask your doctor specific questions. (I am on Effexor Xr for anxiety and depression)

Only a doctor can answer this question, based on your specific needs and tolerance levels. There are many options out there, but what is best for one person may not be right for you. Work with your physician/psychiatrist until you find what works for you.

Share your concern with your doctor. He/she is the only qualified person to suggest medicine for you because he/she knows what you've taken and what you need.
