Our office fish, Norton, has quit eating and he lies on the bottom or on top of his plant kind of hunched over. Norton has had a very long life (we have had him for 2 years) and we take very good care of him... is he just old? anyone know how long these fish live? Is there something we can do to help him??

Bettas can often live for 4-5 years and sometimes even longer. Of course, you don't really have any way to know how old he was when you got him. He may be old, but I would give him a good water change just to be sure it's not a surprise water quality issue.

There must be chlorine interior the water once you replaced it. additionally, what did you sparkling the aquarium tank with? in case you only agitated the sand, then sucked the waste out by ability of the tube and replenished 0.5 the water, then extra water conditioner you need to be correct. I certainly tend to maintain a bucket of water it incredibly is left status overnite so a number of the chlorine evaporates. additionally, if the water used to top off the acquarium has been status at room temperature, then much less risk of temperature fluctuation once you upload back to the tank. never empty/sparkling out the water thoroughly. I used to do this as quickly as I did no longer have lots journey while i became a baby, yet i did no longer lose any fish from that. This became in Asia while the water temperatures do no longer selection too lots, yet in a temperate usa, if the water is from the faucet, that is lots less warm and the fish is far less tolerant. it incredibly is greater suggested if the fish are tropicals as against gold fish that are chilly water fish. besides, you never sparkling a tank using cleansing soap and water except some thing undesirable has befell such because of the fact the tank being poisonous as a results of ineffective fish rotting there and then the drastic degree is to take out each little thing, and wash with heat water and upload chemical components to kill off the germs, then wash the sand and pour it back. it would nevertheless be greater advantageous to leave the water status for 2 days to settle earlier the fish pass back.

Awww... we had an office betta (Buddy) who also lived to be over 2 years. He may be in decline, I think the lifespans of betta are in the 2-3 year range. How are his colors? Buddy lost his brilliant blue colors in the month or so before he finally passed.
We put a plant in the water (with the fish) to help keep it clean.

It sounds like he's on his way out. That's a pretty good life for a Betta.
You might want to check the water temperature. If the water's unusually cold, fish will be very lethargic. You might want to make a partial water change to remove any unhealthy contaminants. Also, take a close look at his fins and gills, checking for ick or fungus.

I myself have a beta and I found out they don't live more than 2 years, sorry I'm sure you did take very good care of your fish, unfortunately its just that they don't have a very long life span.

Beta's don't usually live long..maybe 1 to 2 years. i've had three beta's and two of them died a few months after they were two. so maybe Norton's time is up.
Sorry!

How sad. Unfortunately, he probably is slowly dying. The same thing happened to my Beta. Have you recently changed the water? Sometimes they get so shocked by that, that they die.
