I got a job working with my dad. I promised him i would stay here for at least a year. The problem is...I hate it. It is really far away from my house and I really can't stand my co-worker. I dont know what to do. I am stressed out and find myself bursting into tears all the time. I know that I can get a better job closer to home that pays more but my dad just had triple bypass and i dont want to stress him out... Please any suggestions are welcome.

You have several issues, so let's separate these into different components, ok?

1) you made a committment that you don't feel you can keep
2) you work for a relative so you have a different level of obligation than you would to some other schmuck
3) your boss/father is recovering from surgery and his health may be precarious

Now let's look at how these interact:

A commitment is a commitment, and you made one. However, perhaps you made that commitment under "false pretenses" - you didn't really understand what the job involved, you didn't know you'd have to work with Sam Slug, etc. In addition to learning the lesson about making sure you know what you're getting into before committing, you can now learn the lesson of renegotiating. This means you go back to Boss Daddy and express your concerns. Be prepared to offer some possible solutions - I'll work part time, I'll do work from home two days a week, I'll train my replacement, etc. - as a part of your renegotiation. It will be up to Boss Daddy whether or not he permits you to change the terms of the agreement, and you need to let him know up front that you will honor his decision. This gives him the authority (boss) while showing respect for him as an individual (dad) and still letting you stand on your own two feet (grown up child.)

In terms of how this works with your dad's health, his hospital room is probably not the right place for this discussion, so wait until he's out of the anesthetic and on the road to recovery. His heart was in worse shape before the surgery than it is now, so you are not going to cause him to have a heart attack by telling him your concerns.

All situations are temporary, so put this into perspective - even if you end up sticking it out for a year, it's only a year. It's not a life sentence. You can handle anything once you know there will be an end to it.

Good luck!

Can you speak with your Dad about your concerns and then reduce your hours? Maybe you can work part-time - 3 days a week and spend the rest of the time doing things you enjoy or looking for anotherjob.

Try to look it as a limited time thing and then maybe you won't feel so bad. At least you have a job and a place to go. You can also find things to do after work or on the weekends to look forward to. That should make the day go by quicker and be more bearable.

Good Luck!

I'm sure your father will understand your reasons for leaving that job and finding one that makes you feel a lot happier. Just explain it to him. Maybe he'll be able to offer some advice on how to deal with the situation you're in. It's never a good idea to stay in a job that makes you so unhappy, my mom did that for nearly 10 years and is only now moving on but wishes she would have done it sooner because she stressed herself out so much that she had an aneurism, that's what did her in and made her want to get out of the situation even more - don't let that happen to you, it's not pleasant. She was lucky enough to survive that whole ordeal - in most cases it results in death. You need to take care of you!!!

if it is for your dad, then i would keep with it; there is always a work/life balance that you have to find.. if you are stressing out and putting to much of your energy at work then your life can become very imbalanced. work is work, and truthfully most people hate it...
i feel you have an important weight on your shoulders right now and it is how you thrive in these situations that will make you a stronger person.
keep positive and if there are things you can change, change them; if there are things you hate that cannot be changes; look beyond it, look at the bigger picture. one year is nothing, think of it as a program to get you ready for your next big gig, if you survive and can talk about, you will be a stronger emotionally, spiritually, etc...

Why did you get this job with your dad? To help him drive? How long have you been in this job? Will it take months to be a year or is it just a some short months to go. Try to calmdown and not stress yourself out. Talk to your dad about it but if you only have to go for 3 or four months then you might want to tuff it out. And remember!! do not let know one control your emotions. Good luck. ;)

Help find your replacement and offer to train them as well. That way he won't be stressed and you look more responsible.
