China is indeed on a course to become the next superpower. Though I doubt that this will knock the US down from superpower status. Also, Russia is still a military power house, so they're still around to contend with.
I wouldn't say that China is ahead of the US on all fronts. For example, the US spends billions of dollars per year on research and development in a number of fields. China doesn't come close, as it usually relies on espionage and assistance from other more advanced countries to move its technological prowess forward.

They 're certainly performing like one, what with sending all foreign places information journalists out of Tibet, so they'd't witness the human abuse that their hundreds of troops would injure or worse kill to smother the independence of Tibet that protestors have been peacefully protesting, until eventually the chinese language Police & military created a concern. Plus the government is likewise cracking down on foreign places information comments directly from Beijing China the place they have been think to have freedom to pass approximately devoid of subject . So it incredibly is the hot & more desirable China whose hosting the Olympics this year? Tisk Tisk possibly chinese language products & food are not the only concern the international would desire to Boycott? possibly the Olympic video games too? in the event that they're or are going to be the subsequent great ability, is that a marvelous or undesirable concern? I say no longer so good.

China's growth in the past decades has been accelerating in both economic and military areas. It is one of the few countries with the fastest growing GDP, and as a result have been able to steadily increase their military budget (though still far less than what the US spends). It is by far, the one of the most successful countries ruled by a Communist party.
On the construction front, even as you read this, China is in the middle of literally countless construction projects throughout the country to build, renovate and rejuvenate it's major cities. They are building hundreds of high rise apartment buildings, and in preparation for 2008 Olympics, they've widen highways, built stadiums and are replacing antiquated signs that were once poorly translated in English.
On the human rights front, the Chinese people, although they enjoy fewer civil liberties compared to us Americans, have more liberties today than they did a decade ago. My cousin, a Chinese national, went to Egypt for her honey-moon last year. Chinese tourism has become a bigger business as its people's wealth grows. They own cars, apartments, LCD PCs and get their DVDs for less than $2 US. Yes, they are pirated, but unlike the US, most stores actually sell pirated DVDs for cheap. Although I hated the fact you needed a cellphone to call anyone, as most landlines are not hooked up to allow you to call outside of the building the phone's in.
On the economic front, China's president Hu Jintao this February, toured countries on the African continent to improve trade relations and acquisition of raw material especially oil and natural gases. He promised in return to help develope these countries with construction projects. As a matter of fact, analysts believed China would have the most influence to end the genocide in Darfur because of strong trade relations with Sudan.
On the technological front, China is rapidly becoming the third country to make many advancements formerly achieved by the US and Russia. China is the third country to send astronauts to space. This past January, it became the third country to successfully test a sattelite killing missile (which has stirred controversy). A space walk is scheduled for 2008 and a lunar orbit/landing for 2010.
On the military front, China's current military consists of mostly outdated equipment, however they've been making an effort to train and equipment a small modern technologically advanced army. They have developed the Type-98/99 tank with computerized guidance and turrent stabilizers comparable to modern tanks. The J-10 multipurpose jet is comparable in performance to the F-16. The WZ-10 attack helicopter is the object of much speculation with some analysts suggesting it is as advanced as the Eurocopter Tiger. The QBZ-95 modern assault rifle (and it's variations) fires smaller rounds but at higher velocities, ensuring flatter trajectory and less recoil (meaning it's more accurate). It isn't very clear how effective this rifle really is because China hasn't been involved in a major conflict. If this says anything, it's that China is not likely to be the country to start a war. And China does send peacekeepers to foreign countries, but this isn't covered by the US media because it doesn't support our image of them being a dictatorship with human rights issues and are generally evil some way some how.
Also if you read the linked articles, you'll realize that the phrases that'll come up again and again is 'indigenous design'. China, in the recent decade has been moving away from purchasing arms (the US has a policy not to sell fully operational arms to China and discourage others who do), and has started to design and build their own. This makes their military more self sufficient and eliminates the dependency on foreign weapons.

Not sure what fronts you think China is ahead. They have a lower GDP, smaller military, less trade, no nuclear power, etc. They do have more pollution though. And more people.
But they're going to have serious problems in 20 or so years because of their 1-child program. There will be many old people not working and not enough young to support them. It's happening in Europe right now and their economy is stagnated. China is next.

If it's not China it'll be India. One of the two for sure.
We'd better start learning Hindi and Mandarin!

History tells us that all great empires fall...in this age of speed, it'll happen faster now than it has in the past.
I would place my bets on India before China, as they have a more educated population.
