Not to scare you, but it could be an inner ear infection, a tumor, blood flow problems, a brain injury

Vertigo has two causes -- it can be related to an inner ear problem like ETD (eustation tube disorder) or a viral inner ear infection. Or it can be idiopathic -- meaning that there is no known cause. Many times it can be neurological -- but this is primarliy something that happens with age.

A doctor should check and see if he has nastagmus (involuntary eye movements) to see if it's truly vertigo or perhaps something as simple as low blood sugar. They should run some blood tests as well.

But calm your fears -- It is NOT AIDS or STD related.

Without knowing his age, his medication, how long he's had it, etc. I can't give you a TON of information...

However, have him take meclizine -- you can buy it over the counter as Bonine. That helps steady the room and is nothing but an antihistimine (otherwise known as Antivert). That can also help if he's suffering from nausea, too. Another help for nausea is ginger honey (found at any health food store). If all else fails, take him to an acupuncturist -- I know it seems odd, but that works WONDERS if it's an inner ear issue.

The other thing to try is a treatment many ENT's use for vertigo. Have him lie flat on his back with his head turned to one side and run a neck massager on the mastoid bone (the bone right behind his ear) for 30 seconds. Have him turn his head the other way and repeat on the opposite side. The have him sit up and keep his head perfectly steady for 2-4 hours. This can help the "crystals" in the inner ear (which have settled) start to float again, which can lessen the effects of vertigo.

Keep in mind that viral vertigo can last anywhere from a few days to a full year.

However, if he's having ear pain, ringing in his ears, etc. with it, it's likely ETD. This has a few causes, but the most likely is an allergic reaction. An oral antihistimine (like Allegra) and a nasal steriod (like Flonase) can help clear this up within a week's time.

I hope that helps... I know how horrible living with vertigo can be -- I had it for over 2 months!

If all else fails, take him to a really good ENT.

Vertigo is usually caused by an infection or other blockage of the inner ear. Has he seen an ear specialist? The other cause would be any infection that resulted in general fatigue and weakness; when one is close to fainting from fatigue, vertigo can occur.

I have never heard of vertigo being caused by AIDS or other STDs, but if he has any (even slight) reason to believe he might have any STD, he should get tested; otherwise he is needlessly endangering you.

It's typically a viral problem, and in most people it clears up in 7-14 days. If he has pills for it, he has already seen a doctor.

In some people, the problem never completely clears up, or recurs frequently. At the moment, there is no known cure.

Labyrinthitis, or vertigo, is not caused by or associated with STDs or HIV

This is usually from an unbalance in the fluid in your ears. The fluid in ears is how humans balance, so if it isnt all right, then you will feel dizzy and off balance even when youre not.

Ive had this, and the only thing that works for me is anti-nausia medicine. It doesnt make the dizzy feeling go away, but it makes it so I dont feel like puking all the time.

I have never heard of it having to do with aids or stds.

my hubby had it for a while,,they really don't know the cause of it...they think it maybe a calcium deposit that gets loose in the ear fluid and floats around in there and it makes them loose there balance. The hope is ..is for the deposit to sink to the bottom and stop floating around. It did for my hubby but no telling if it will happen again or not. Sorry hon it is heck to live with but I wish you the best....just remember it is very hard on them and it ruins there life so be patient
