Some foolish knave tried challenging me to a romp of fisticuffs. I figured I'd extenuate the situation, because I would thrash him and make him grovel for his life, which I did. And the young lad cried profusely like the baby doth expacterate his tears.

"The knave grovelled before the king attempting to extenuate the circumstances he was found in with the Queen the previous night."

Here the knave....(a male servant OR someone of questionable character and ethics OR someone of humble postion)....grovels IE begs in apology. He is attempting to extenuate (make light of, seem less, in this case "explain away") having been found commiting adultery with the Queen.
