Do you mean how to get a new IP address?

ISP is an Internet Service Provider.

Your IP address is provided by your Internet Service provider either a static IP (fixed one that does not change) or dynamic (one that is "leased" to your for a time then either renewed or changed by the ISP). Most ISP issue dynamic IP's and your computer is set to "obtain an IP address automatically" ifrom the ISP's DHCP server.

The only way to get a new IP is to call your Internet Service Provider and have them issue you a new one or more than
likely have them reset the modem and have their DHCP server issue you a new one. Or if it is a dynamic one just wait and it will eventually change on its own.

You cannot just pick a new one. You will loose Internet access.

Assuming you mean IP address, I'll answer this the same way I did last time someone asked...

With most ISPs, you have a dynamic IP address that changes automatically every so often- with dial-up, it's different every time you connect- so you can change it by disconnecting and reconnecting. With broadband, your lease on your IP address expires after a certain amount of time (different with each ISP.). You just have to wait it out and your IP will change.

On the off chance that you actually do have a static (non-changing) IP address, you can't change it yourself- you have to ask your ISP to do it for you.

I don't think you meant the question that you asked. Changing ISP is an easy thing, easily found,. The ISP being the people who connect you to the internet. For example you might be with BT to get connected, then have a BT email and BT webspace.

Correct (or ignore me) if I'm wrong but I think you more likely meant your domain.

I think it is a very good idea for families to have their own domian that is independant of their ISP. That way you can select the cheapest ISP in your area, totally ignore their email addresses and just carry on using your own.

You can do that with the likes of Yahoo, make your home pages, emails and other items on your Yahoo account. No need at all to lock yourself into an ISP, where you can't change them because it can be too awkward letting every person you know, and every web site where you have left your email address as a contact, know that you are changing emails.

But better still, in my view, is to actually have your own domain, give each of the family their own email address, you also get your webspace, which you can use for the whole family, or have areas that each of them can use.

For example, lets say you are called Bob Smith, you might choose a domain like
www.smithfamily.co.uk
Then each of the family can have their email addresses,
bob@smithfamily.co.uk
jen@smithfamilty.co.uk

You still have to pay your ISP, because they still connect you to the Internet. But you can change them with no risk at all to your domain.

1. Here is how to start (I will put links at the end)
First find a suitable name, domain names have to be unique and for a family domain you want one that can be semi-guessed by people who know you. Try a few out in link 1, until you have one you like and isn't already taken. Don't actually buy the domain here, this is just a quick way to look for a one.
2. You need a a host for your domain. I tend to reccomend one of the two on my list here, I have used both and never had a problem with them. The first is my own first choice, the second is cheaper but keep an eye on the number of email boxes, make sure the plan offers enough for your family, and possible additions.. You do get more for your money, so campare them to ensure it already goes over your current limits.
3. Once armed with your domain name and host, sign up. You are given full instructions on setting up your web page and email addresses.
Then make this your main email address. You are in control, you can add and remove email accounts as needed, the domain belongs to You. If you are ever unhappy with your domain host, you can change hosts as easy as you change your socks, with no loss of emails.

I think you mean IP (Internet Protocol) Address. If you want to change ISP (Internet Service Provider), give them a call & discontinue their service. Call another ISP and apply for a new service.

If you want to change IP Address, restart your pc. Everytime you restart, a new IP Address is assigned to your system. This is because you have a Dynamic IP Address.

But if you specifically told your ISP to provide you with a Static IP Address ( I doubt it though coz there's an extra fee for that ) Then you'll have to call your ISP to have them change it.

What are you asking?

ISP=Internet Service Provider
Just sign up for service and pay the bill.
IP=Internet Protocol
Generally when you connect to the internet you will get a DHCP address from your ISP.

Just ring your internet service provider, give your reasons and ask for a different isp address.
The isp address can still be traced to your internet service provider, and they can trace it to you.

Bob Z is totally correct.

I will add to his comment this suggestion:

If you wish to change your IP address to browse the web and not have places you visit able to obtain your IP address, use a proxy.

You can use web-based proxies, you can use a proxy programme which automatically changes your browser's settings to use various proxies, or you can manually enter the proxy information into your browser's settings.

Go here for some web-based proxies: http://www.xroxy.com/webproxylist.html
