okay. so like a year ago my cousin and i were using my pc and it froze. she turned the computer off and then back on. when she turned it back on there was nothing on the desktop and there was no start menu or whatever. we have to access everything with ctrl+alt+del and its a real pain. now the real problem is that the internet does not work ever since a storm hit and the electricity went out. if you have any suggestions, please let me know. i am desperate!!!!!!!!

Since there are so many problems with the computer (operating system, internet, maybe power issues/virus/who knows what else), I would simply take it to a local repair shop. They will charge you maybe about $100 to go through it and get it working again.

The alternative is to get the windows CD, put it into the drive and power cycle it. You will see it ask you if you want to boot from the CD. Say yes. Go through the prompts to reinstall windows on the existing installation, but dont format unless you want to lose all your existing files that might be there.

When you are done, select the windows update from the start button and spend a few hours getting it all updated BEFORE you try to surf the net. Also install antivirus, antispy.

wow... looks like your OS was fried when your motherboard took that electric shock. First thing you should do is buy a Surge protector, then (since you can't get anything back anyway) use your windows startup disk to re-install the OS on your machine. This WILL delete everything and anything you had on your computer, but it should solve your problem.

I could fix it if you were in the West Covina, Ca area. you might have to use your recovery disk to bring back your desktop. The associated files that brings up your desktop are now corrupted never do the "sudden" turn on turn off. Log off or shut down properly using your start button..

When using a computer you should use a surge protector, i fear the worst for your computer - take it to a shop to be checked & repaired.
