The Athens of Pericles, around 452 BC. A society so beautiful that its people were ready to defend it because they knew how good it was. In those days, before Athens became imperialistic, the defense was by the armed citizenry, not by a professional military caste. They created incredible art, they built the Parthenon, they studied under Socrates, and they invented democracy.

O.K., they kept slaves and never thought of giving the vote to women, but for the time they were pretty good.
