yesterday my son went to the doctor for his monthly checkup and she asked if he had started trying to crawl yet. i thought he was ahead of most babies from what he's already doing but when she asked that i kind of thought that was ridiculous for her to even bring up i mean he just turned 4 months.

Sounds crazy to me. My daughter didn't start crawling until she was 8 months and she's always been ahead on everything else. The average is 6-7 months, so he's fine.

Babies develop at different rates. My oldest nephew was turning over at 1 week, crawling by 4 months, walking (holding on to something) by 8 months. My son on the other hand is 17 months and has only been walking for about a month. Because all babies are different, I think pediatricians just ask those questions to see how quickly or slowly your baby is learning to do new things. It doesn't mean she's crazy, and it doesn't mean your baby is developing slowly either.

Wow, there seems to be a lot of negativity toward the people who've suggested the doctor was kinda odd for asking you that question. Well, here's one more. That IS odd. Don't take too much of that "your baby's ahead or somewhat behind" stuff to heart. They're going off of statistics, and all babies do not grow at the same rate, but still are very healthy. Maybe try looking into another doctor if stuff like this keeps coming up. But by all means, ask why she would ask something like that.

When you visit the pediatrician for well baby checks they have a list of developmental questions they go through. As you answer yes or no, they check the item off of their list. I was told by my son's pediatrician that they continue going down the list until you finally say "no." So perhaps your son actually IS developing a little bit ahead of schedule and the next "milestone" on the pediatrician's list was crawling. Don't worry, your son is definitely not behind (and I don't think the pediatrician is crazy either!!) :)

I think the "average" age for crawling is between 6-9 months (my son crawled at 6.5). Some children decide to move earlier, some obviously pick it up later, and some children skip crawling and go straight to walking. I don't think she's crazy for asking. I would have to assume she was just covering all of the milestones to see where your son falls in range (she also probably asked if he was smiling, rolling, eyesight/hearing okay, etc.). I'm sure she was just getting a feeling for his development.

My little guy is 7-1/2 months old now and is just starting to get on all fours and rock, not quite crawl yet. 4 months is a bit early to be crawling.

I would look in to getting a new doctor, if she is a pediatrician she should know a baby does not normally crawl at 4 mnths, the normal age is anywhere between 7 to 10 mnths. i am sure your son in progressing normally, especially if you believe he is because parents can always tell!

You have got to be kidding me? I am a mom of 3 boys and i will tell you this much..... they did not even roll over on their own until they were at least 5 months old. They did not start crawling til they were 8 months old. My oldest son who is now 15 started walking at 10 months old and the other two were 12 months or so. I think that it is time to find another doc.

Babies often do start trying to crawl by four months, but few succeed until at least six months of age and usually later. Your pediatrician isn't crazy for asking.

At four months, your baby should just be moving his arms and legs, its not very likely that he would be crawling yet. There are always kids who end up walking at 9 months but thats early so I wouldnt worry about it. If he is learning to push himself up with his arms so that his stomach is off the ground, that is great for now!
