It began increasing significantly about 1970 when Mexico's economy went kaput! The people had no jobs, there was no provision for food from the government and there was, as always a lot of graft and corruption in the government. The people started coming to the US in droves for self preservation. Even if they got put in jail, at least they were fed.
The US tried to deal with it by giving citizenship to the ones who had been here working for three years or more but that didn't really work out because it was impossible to determine who had been here that long and who hadn't.
The border stretches several hundred miles over all kinds of terrain and is almost impossible to keep secure.

In fact, in the 1840's, at the end of the Mexican War, a large number of Mexicans became residents of this country with the annexation of Texas and California as States.
A further jump in Mexican population occurred in 1912, with the admission of Arizona and New Mexico as states.
So actually, the greatest Mexican immigration was an absorption.

Whether or not illegal immigrants get welfare or not, they do drain the economy by sending the majority of money they make here back to Mexico, also, go to any hospital emergency room after hours and take a look around. That's free medical care. The job market stall was the reason for the decline.
