People have different kinds of friendships -- from each other, and among their set of friends.

A given person can have "friend I talk to" "friend I do x with" "friend who's been in my life forever" and other sorts.

Also, since humans are complex, and therefore relationships are complex, a lot of times what's most important in a given friendship is that there's more than one thing that's important about it.

Sorry, I just get cranky seeing so many people feel they have to boil complex, multi-facetted, varying phenomena down to overly-simplistic over-generalizations.

They're neither accurate nor helpful.

I say honesty is the most important thing in a friendship because without honesty their is no friendship. how can you trust a friend if their never honest with you. plus some friends are very two-faced so you have to watch out for that.

Trust, Honest, Respect and Confidentiality are what I find most important in a friendship as well as having the same values and a listening ear as well as being fun.

Trust, honesty, respect and communication. Not only in a friendship, but also in families and relationships with husbands/wives and boyfriends/girlfriends. NO relationship will work without ALL 4 of those.

Honesty. Having that leads to trust. Trust leads to being open with your thoughts and feelings. And that is a great recipe for a fantastic friendship. One lie can ruin it all.
